orange alert issued for mumbai till tuesday as heavy rains continue in konkan region
Mumbai and neighbouring districts brace for sustained heavy to very heavy rainfall, forecast to last through mid-week.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, effective through Tuesday, August 19, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across most parts of the city. Multiple pockets—including Powai, Fort, and Borivali—registered rainfall exceeding 100 mm in the past 24 hours, while western suburbs averaged around 104 mm, island city saw 93 mm, and eastern suburbs recorded 78 mm. Notable hotspots: Charkop (190 mm), Anand Nagar (188 mm), Borivali (168 mm), Powai (134 mm), and Bhandup (129 mm).
The persistent pre-monsoon rains are being driven by a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, creating an east west trough extending toward the Arabian Sea—a meteorological setup that’s fueling the active rainfall cycle over the Konkan coast. In response, the IMD has also placed Thane and Palghar under orange alert, while Ratnagiri remains on red alert for August 17 & 18, signaling a heightened risk of extreme precipitation. Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel and stay updated via official weather channels to stay safe during this prolonged wet spell.
